Rollomatic has developed a method for grinding rotary cutting tools with PCBN cutting edges. The high hardness, chemical stability and temperature resistance of PCBN gives the tool longer life with the same or even increased material removal rates and a more consistent surface quality of the machined part.

The GrindSmart® 628XS comes equipped with a dressing unit and Gap Control. Two acoustic-emission (AE) sensors are needed to grind PCBN tools with full automation. One is mounted on the dressing unit and used to approach the grinding wheels with the dressing wheel, and the second AE sensor is used for the automatic wheel teach.

The GrindSmart® 628XS is the right choice to grind tools with PCBN cutting edges, for longer tool life and heavier stock removal. We are currently developing this same process for larger diameters on the GrindSmart® 6000XL.
