SmartEdge™ from Rollomatic

Edge geometry on cutting tools, particularly on high performance drills, affects tool performance. That’s why it’s important to have the most accurate cutting edge possible. With the Rollomatic SmartEdge™ method of grinding, you can achieve the best possible geometry on your cutting edge with Gap Control, an acoustic sensor system where a rotating grinding wheel on approach to the part will trigger the skip signal for the CNC control (patent pending).

The Rollomatic SmartEdge™ grinding is a revolutionary concept, combining scientific methods with traditional grinding principles to achieve unmatched accuracy. The GrindSmart 628XS with patented gap control will acoustically “hear” the noise from the wheel, and just as the wheel touches the cutting edge, the sensor will use the skip signal from the Fanuc control and stop the move. At that point, the wheel has touched the cutting edge by no more than 1 or 2 microns. This procedure is repeated many times along the cutting edge, and works fast, so digitizing a drill cutting edge does not take more than 25 to 45 seconds, with high accuracy. After digitizing, the wheel will come back and grind the edge-prep on the same grinding point used for digitizing.

The Rollomatic edge preparation covers drills ranging from 1 – 16 mm, and works well for all drill points such as 4/2-facet or conical, with S-radius gash or straight gash and split point. The system can also grind an edge preparation on curved cutting edges (high performance drills) and negative rake chamfers.
